Every growing service company hits the same problem eventually. The standards that were easy to hold with a handful of people get harder to hold with forty. DC Pines Roofing was founded in Houston in 2021, and five years later it is a multi-trade exterior company installing roofs, seamless gutters, and windows across the metro. The DC Pines Roofing growth story is less about getting bigger and more about how the company tried to grow without lowering the bar.
The DC Pines Education Center put together this look at the principles behind that growth: how the company trains people, who gets promoted, and why one standard applies to every job no matter how busy the schedule gets.

What the Growth Looks Like
In 2026, DC Pines Roofing was named to Qualified Remodeler’s Top 500 list of the largest remodeling firms in the United States, ranked #403. The published profile lists 297 completed jobs in 2025 and 42 employees. The Education Center’s breakdown of the Top 500 ranking explains what the list measures and what it doesn’t. In the same period, the company also earned a 2025 BBB Award for Excellence in roofing.
The numbers matter less than what they demand. Close to 300 jobs a year means close to 300 estimates, install days, and final walkthroughs, and every one of them has to meet the same standard as the first.
Principle One: Train Before Anyone Is on Their Own
The fastest way to lower quality while growing is to hire quickly and push people into the field before they’re ready. DC Pines took the opposite approach. According to the company’s Growth and Leadership page, new sales team members go through a structured, paid 12-week training program covering inspections, homeowner conversations, proposals, financing, and the company’s CRM. They shadow senior reps on live appointments and get coached after each one.
That training is also why homeowners see a consistent process at the kitchen table. The Education Center’s walkthrough of a DC Pines estimate shows what that process looks like from the homeowner’s side.

Principle Two: Promote From Within
DC Pines fills leadership roles from inside the company whenever it can. Promotion is based on performance and on how much a person lifts the people around them, not on tenure. The reasoning comes straight from the company’s leadership page: it would rather promote someone who already lives the standards than hire a stranger to enforce them.
That approach traces back to the company’s founder. Jeff Ternois served as a U.S. Army Infantry Captain, led a platoon, and later handled personnel operations for a Stryker infantry squadron in Europe. Building leaders from inside the unit is a familiar idea in the Army, and it carried over into how DC Pines grows its teams.
Principle Three: One Standard on Every Job
Growth also tests whether a company’s promises survive a busy season. At DC Pines, the people who quote a roof are the same people who show up when it’s time to build it, and every install is documented with photos so homeowners can see exactly what was done. Inspections follow a guided photo checklist through the company’s own sales software, so documentation doesn’t depend on who happens to be on the appointment.
The giving model scales the same way. Every completed install sends $50 to Camp Hope, the Houston recovery program for combat veterans, which the Education Center covered in its look at the team’s Camp Hope visit. As the number of jobs grows, so does the donation.
